Shacktopus battery, Wi-Fi card, and packet TNC

The right-rear corner of the box.  From top down, you can see the Linksys WET11, the Inspired Energy 95 Watt-hour Lithium-Ion smart battery, and the Kantronics KPC-3+ TNC.

tuner and RF section

This is the "plumbing corner" with the Elecraft T1 autotuner (and 817 smart interface, not yet in photo), the Tenna-Dipper bolted to the top of the tuner, and the snarl of coax and BNC connectors including one to the outside world.  The little channel kluge in the foreground carries a BNC for the Tenna Dipper as well as a spring-loaded grounding post.  The board on the right is the SMBUS smart charger for the Li-Ion battery, and the blue connector is part of the pressure transducer board.

Major components in place

This is a major moment... the removal of the protective paper on the top polycarbonate lid.  I just finished mounting the kk7uq and Microham Y8 interface boards, the GPS from SparkFun, and the detented antenna mount harvested from the old Oki 491 3-watt cellular phone that was on BEHEMOTH for a while.  In the photo, you can also see the Technologic TS-7200 ARM Linux board mounted atop the Yaesu FT-817, the Yaesu VX-2R on its platform, the speaker, the ambient microphone mounted atop the Palm mini-paddle, and the other components discussed in earlier photos on this page.

Budd, W3FF, examining Shacktopus at Sea-Pac 2005

At the Sea-Pac 2005 Amateur Radio convention (
Seaside, Oregon, June 18-19, 2005), Shacktopus made its public debut.  Here is Budd, W3FF (of Buddipole fame) examining the prototype as Steve, N4RVE and Jeannie, K7GNE look on.
